The Ivan Mitchell Memorial

Sussex Christmas Charity Cup.

The 2009 nominated charity is the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey.


The Sussex Christmas Charity cup had its genesis in an innocent remark made after racing one evening at Broadbridge Heath on 8th December 2006.
"Can we borrow the Adur outdoor track over Christmas for a bit of a laugh and a practice?"
After a beer or two, this simple idea was taken to it's logical conclusion... a multi club challenge race meeting with the proceeds to be donated to charity.
With representatives from Horsham, Adur and 3A all there at the begining, it was decided that all Sussex clubs would be invited.
  1. The Adur Recreation Ground outdoor facilities would be used as there was no hire fee to pay, maximising returns for the charity.
  2. Both circuit and oval tracks would be used to give greatest flexibility for all clubs to come along and race.
  3. There would be a trophy for the winning club.
  4. Invitations would be issued via club forums and emails to all Sussex clubs.
  5. The nominated charity would be St Barnabas House for the first year.

The First event took place on 28th December 2006 at the Adur Recreation Ground tracks.
£138 was raised in entry fees and donations on the day.

In 2007, a Sussex RC racer, Ivan Mitchell passed away after a long battle against cancer.
This event was renamed as a fitting memorial to Ivan.
The charity remains St Barnabus for 2007.
In 2007, the Ivan Mitchell Memorial Cup raised in excess of £450 in entry fees, donations, and sponsorship.

The 2008 challenge saw another sterling effort with over £500 raised for St Barnabas.

2009

In 2009, (Technically 2010, as the meet is on Jan 3rd), we will be back at Adur Recreation Ground for a 9:00 am start to booking in. Racing will start at 10:00 am.
Classes for 2009 will be :
  • Electric Touring car: RTR class, 17.5BL (Stock), 13.5BL (Superstock)
  • 10th and 8th IC Circuit cars
  • Mini
  • V12 Mardave oval and/or circuit
  • 1/8th I/C Oval classes
